Chapter Eleven

LADY MOWBRAY came down for breakfast and found Eden already seated before a plate of eggs and sausage. She spread a dollop of marmalade on her toast. “Good morning, Mother. Did you sleep well?”

“Not as well as you by all appearances,” the Countess observed. “You have the look of the cat that ate the canary. What have you done now?”

“Why must you always suspect me of something? I’m happy. Am I not allowed to be happy?”

“Yes, of course, dearest. What is the reason for your happiness?”

Eden blushed recalling Wulfric’s manhood entering her, the sweet-smelling grass under the willow, and how wickedly often they made love yesterday. “I’m going to town tomorrow to look at the latest fashions and that always makes me happy.”

“New dresses,” her mother said with a sigh. “Yes, they have always cheered you up. I suppose you’ll want Timothy to drive you to the station?”

“Yes, please, Mother.”

A pang of guilt pricked her conscience. She was planning to marry without telling her mother anything about it and the Countess was being so kind. It would break Rose Mowbray’s heart when she discovered the truth. Eden wondered if their relationship would ever recover. She wished her brother was here to confide in. Nash would know what to do.

She was soon to be a married woman. She couldn’t keep running to her older brother for advice. “Mother, there is something I want to talk to you about. Something I have to confess, actually.”

The Countess stopped buttering her toast and lifted her head to look at her daughter. Eden drew courage from a divine source. She had none herself at the moment. “It’s regarding Wulfric Chaucer. He has been very kind to me since my return and we have become close—as you know. As I have said. Well, the thing is—he’s in love with me. He’s said so.”

Lady Mowbray set her knife down with a sharp clatter. “Has he indeed,” she replied coldly.

Eden’s stomach dropped. “Well, yes, he has and I think—I mean—I feel sure that I feel the same. Love, I mean. I love him and I would like to marry him one day.”

A mask of resolve came over her mother’s face. “Out of the question. You will not marry Wulfric Chaucer. Not one day. Not ever. I absolutely forbid it.”

Utterly indifferent to Eden’s white face, Rose continued. “I don’t doubt that Wulfric believes himself to be in love with you. He may be sincere. But he is a desperate young man with few prospects. How can he be certain of anything?” Lady Mowbray warmed to her theme. “He had no business telling you he loved you and he knows it. The fact that he took that rash step tells me he has an agenda. Wulfric sees you as a lifeline. Marriage to a Mowbray would certainly open doors for him. I don’t wish to malign an innocent young man or tar him with the same brush as his father—but you must admit, Eden, this interest of his is sudden.
